Our story
Welcome- A little bit of history why I became involved with Aquaponics to grow plants and fish harmoniously to produce 100% organic food.
It all started on a trip to Thailand in 2012 to visit my wife’s (Gena) family. Talking to my father in law about AQUACULTURE (Raising fish in a controlled environment). My father in law is a retired Agriculture and Fisheries Officer. On returning to Bermuda I started to research about the viability of starting an Aquaculture farm in Bermuda (Raising Tilapia Fish). Also at this time I was concerned about the way food was being grown. GMOs, pesticides etc.
Researching on the internet I came across AQUAPONICS now this really sparked my interest, growing fish and plants together to produce 100% ORGANIC Fish and Vegetables.
I started with a very basic system by using a normal fish tank with some feeder fish bought from the local store, which we set up inside the house near a window. We made some holes in polystyrene and floated the plants on top – DISASTER………. Plants and fish died.
With the more extensive research and with a lot more knowledge of the dynamics of how the whole system works, I proceeded to build a mini system in my back garden using Rubbermaid totes and an old 55 gallon Drum. VOILA!! It worked the fish did not die and the plants grew.
This was exciting for me and as my knowledge base grew, I expanded the system, changed things around, and landed at the stage I am at now.
The whole process has become a great learning curve and exciting. I love it.
My intention with this website is guide future new Aquaponic Farmers in the right direction.
The Internet is a marvelous learning tool, but beware as you can be given a lot of misguided information. (As I was initially given).
So please have a look around this website, I will be posting true educational information as I go along and regularly update.
I hope to encourage all schools and general public to grow their own organic vegetables in the future.
